Hippo Woman 2011

Hippo Woman
That is me today: Jan 14 2011 - It is NOT who I want to be in 2012

This is an honest daily account of my efforts to shed the fat.

I intend to be brutally honest in this day-by-day account. I will probably turn into a complete bitch. If my husband lives through this it will be a miracle. I have my doubts.

The binge eating stops here and exercise will be more that a thought. Wish me luck, Rose NZ

Mediterranean Rice Recipe By Rose Hala

Mediterranean Rice Recipe -cooking time approx 7 minutes.

Ingredients:
1 cup of raw rice
2 cups of cold water
1 cup of frozen mixed chopped veges ( bagged variety from shop)
Combine rice and water together and cook till water is half absorbed by the rice. Then add frozen veges and cook till water is absorbed. Mix the veges through the rice as they cook.

Optional Ingredients: I add these in my Mediterranean rice.
4x chopped stuffed olives.
4x sun-dried tomatoes - I use the ones marinated in olive oil for added flavour. I also add a tablespoon of the flavoured oil.

Toss chopped olives, tomatoes and oil through the veges and rice then serve while warm. Tastes amazing and will keep in the fridge for the next day if there is some over.

Soup: The tasty, easy, cheap to make variety.

This is the soup I make and it's not cheffy. I don't pretend to be a chef - I cook because I have to - end of story!

Ingredients:
1x medium potatoe
1x medium onion
2x medium carrots ( I put in extra cause I like carrots) :)
1x tablespoon of dried stock: either: beef, chicken, vegetable
For flavour: I use a pinch of Italian herbs, paprika, hot curry powder for some 'heat' and about a half teaspoon of dried fennel seeds. Then season with Black pepper.
1x diced slice of bacon - optional.
Salt - the dried stock can be salty as well as the bacon - so taste the water before adding any salt. You can salt it at the table once it's cooked but if you put too much salt in, it is a bugger to fix - trust me, been there lesson learned.

Cooking:
I speed up the cooking by boiling water in the jug whilst I'm chopping the vegetables then once all the ingredients are in the pot cover them with the boiled water. I cook my soup on the stove top put it on a medium heat to start with then when it gets to a rolling boil turn it down to a very gentle simmer and slow cook it till all the vegetables are tender.
Optional Extra: Take off the heat and add a handful of frozen peas and corn - Firstly it will add flavour and texture and secondly it will cool the soup down quicker so hungry people can eat it sooner.
Enjoy - and leftovers taste even better the next day - just make sure to reheat thoroughly in the microwave. Rose NZ

Dessert Options: let's face it - we all love em'

Paddle Pop Ice Cream Blocks - any flavour. These are a fantastic dessert option. They satisfy that ice cream craving and they are worth minimal points with Weight Watchers.
Want a rich chocolate fix - look no further than a chocolate flavoured Paddle Pop ice cream block. YUM!!!

Devon-Kiwi Toast: - This based on the delicious Devonshire Teas I remember getting on our trips around NZ.
Toast - 1x slice per person then cover with Apricot conserve - my choice, but any fruit topping will do nicely. Then spray canned whipped cream over the topping. Don't be concerned about the use of cream here - canned whipped cream has far less fat = looks lots but mostly air.
Please try this delicious, decadent, dessert that is prepared in minutes. It is really YUM! :)

Hippo woman Food Account: day 46 Feb 26 2011

Another good and enjoyable Saturday as we went to the beach and I made great food choices too. :)
  • Breakfast #1
2x small fresh oranges.  I woke up at the ridiculous hour of 6am - on a Saturday!! yeah - idiot.... :(
So rather than cook or bother with any food prep fruit seemed the easiest and quietest option available.
No :) for eating healthy this time as waking up early was just plain dumb!

  • Breakfast #2
4 baby potatoes and 2x sausages steamed. Adding sausages is a breeze as they steam too inside the bag!
The cooking method I use is so fab, delicious, and sooo no fuss - no mess brilliant that I want to share it with you.  Use this for any vegetable you choose. I also cook fish and chicken this way. Please try it.
Use microwave safe plastic bags only ( I always use 2 - 1 inside the other just in case ) Inside the bag place chopped potatoes, herbs, spices and seasoning then twist the top of the bag and lightly *seal it *
- I use a clothes peg for this as it's easy to remove later.
***NOTE: the bag is cooking inside the microwave - don't use a metal tie.
Place in the microwave and cook until done - usually about 6-7 minutes. The bag will go like a balloon and it will be extremely hot with steam trapped inside the bag - use caution when opening the bag.
I usually remove the peg then cut the bag to get at the contents. No fuss, no mess -- just throw the remains of the bag in the bin. Saves washing a pot, right... :)

  • Lunch
Half a cheese scone with butter spread on it.
  • Afternoon Tea
Other half of the scone - buttered. Bet you guessed that one eh?  haha :)  Anyway it was a nice treat spread over 2 meal sittings. Good one :)
  • Dinner
Cheated and choose the steamed potatoe option again. Was a bit tired if the truth be known and took the shortest route to be fed and watered. lol  Still a healthy option gotta be happy about it. :)  Rose

Hippo Woman Apology

This is a huge apology from me it has been weeks since my last entry and this has been due to a number of things. Firstly on the Feb 29 my computer had heart failure and had to go to the shop for a check up - it needed a full clean as it 'was running hot' and although they did a good job, I can only use it till it starts to get warm then it shuts off. So major pain but I can't afford to buy another computer at the moment so...there it is.
Now of course the earthquake has had a huge impact in fact it's a devastating blow to all New Zealanders.

GOOD NEWS THOUGH!  I have carried on with the eating plans i have been doing all this time and am very pleased to say I am loosing weight at a slow and steady rate. I will start the daily reports from today and will weigh-in on the last day of the month...easy to remember which day to do it then. Still on track, 3x :) :) :) Rose

Hippo Food Account Day 23 Saturday Feb 05/ 02/2011

Today tooth is still touchy but nowhere near as bad as yesterday but even so I am going to baby sit it for a while till I can get to the dentist in a few days. Good for the food choices eating tooth friendly meals so not all bad :)
    Here is the account today:
    • Breakfast/brunch
2 slices of toast - extremely lightly toasted- tooth friendly style.
    1x ripped up lettuce leaf
    1x bacon slice - steamed/ poached
    2x Poached eggs
I made a sort of my style eggs Benedict without the sauce element. The runny yolks not only served as my sauce they softened up the toast. It was delicious.I'm so impressed I'm thinking of having this for my dinner. :)
    • Late afternoon tea
I know i have timing issues with meals - again! sucks but there it is......
2x barely toasted slices topped with Marmite and lettuce.
    • Dinner
Same as breakfast. I know this is only just staying in my 6x a day bread limit but it is within the limits and it is what I can eat at the moment. In otherwords - get over it because I am.......!

Hippo Food Account Day 22 Friday 4 Feb 2011

A positive day so far but I have a niggling tooth ache - you know the kind that come and go so you never quite know whether to bite the bullet and spend the dosh at the dentist or just stay the course and take a shit load of asprin and hope it settles down till the next scheduled visit. Anyway here is the food breakdown today:
    • Brunch
I figured rice was an easy option today so I made enough Mediterranean Rice for now and later.
1x bowl of rice with a 2 tablespoons of grated cheese
    • Snack
1x bowl of rice no cheese so good choice :)
    • Dinner
3x sausages chopped finely.  Tooth a bit niggle again so this was the easy soft option which will take me through till the morning. Not that good a choice but not too bad under the circumstances. Rose NZ

Moment Of Truth ....Weigh in Day 21

    Jan 14 2011  Original starting weight  was        105kg  /  231 pounds

    Feb 03 2011  First weigh in after starting blog  101kg  /   222  pounds    LOSS:   4kg /  9 pounds   :)

I know this is a very small loss - but it is a Loss so I am going to take it. And I did this with zero exercise!  :) :)
It's amazing I never thought it would work so fast without some form of exercise. Once I get back into the pool for some low impact water walking it will be ever better. But I am Very Happy Today!  Rose NZ

Hippo Food Account Day 21 Thursday 3 Feb 2011

A really good start to today. I need it to be after last nights debacle!
    • Breakfast
    1x medium fresh Banana
    • Lunch
    2x punnets of fresh blueberries
3x chubbachubs - hard sugar-free lolly pops with a variety of fruity flavors.
    • Snack
    6 x ice cream cones.
    • Dinner
A very small piece of rump steak - hand size
    lettuce, tomatoe, pickled baby gherkins
    chopped in a salad
    2x poached eggs
A very good day with food and weight loss. I don't expect this every weigh-in but loosing 4 kg is fab this time.

Hippo Food Account Day Wednesday 20 2 Feb 2011

A good start to the day but as you will see it all went to custard during dinner. But more on that later - here is the breakdown for the day.
    • Breakfast
1x foot long Subway club  within the 6grams of fat or less range so good choice :)
    • Afternoon Snack
    2 low fat yoghurt tubs
    3x fresh peaches
five ice cream cones for a crunchy finish. Again great choices :) :)
    •  Dinner
OK this it the where the big let down occurs. After business house bowls we got some fried chicken and potatoe pieces on the way home.
    1x medium drum stick
    2x potatoes
lettuce, half a tomatoe and 1x cube piece of feta cheese in a salad
Not the wisest choices and to make matters worse I didn't stop there with the silly food choices! :( :(
    • Dessert
1x large Melting moment biscuit  that is possibly the worst food option out of all the choices today. 4x :( :( :( :(
So all in all a sad end to what should have been a great day. I promised not to beat myself up
and I won't - but I will be making exceptionally wise food choices tomorrow - especially as it is weigh in day.
I was fairly confident that I had lost a bit of weight, but not so much now. Still I will persevere with this - I owe it to myself to continue along this path no matter how hard or rocky it gets.Hugs to all, Rose NZ
